The Future of Urban Revitalization
The Future of Urban Revitalization in Aruba examines how urban districts can be revitalized in ways that go beyond aesthetics and short-term economic returns. The publication is grounded in a three-year case study of the Weststraat corridor, a historically and culturally significant area of Oranjestad that experienced prolonged economic decline.
Drawing on sustained, place-based observation and stakeholder engagement between 2022 and 2025, the study explores how culture, affordability, and coordinated activation shape long-term district performance. Rather than treating revitalization as a design challenge, the analysis frames it as a systemic process influenced by social dynamics, governance structures, and operational capacity.
The publication introduces the Social Impact Value Framework as a tool for understanding how social impact value, operational resilience, and financial sustainability interact at the district level. Through scenario-based Social Return on Investment analysis, it illustrates how culturally grounded interventions can generate significant social value, while also highlighting the conditions required for that value to translate into sustained economic activity.
Together, the findings offer a new lens for policymakers, investors, and practitioners seeking to understand how urban revitalization can support long-term social and economic performance in Aruba, guided by the principle of impact over profit.
